Lincoln Calling is an annual, non-profit music festival focusing on emerging artists and occurring across multiple indoor/outdoor venues in downtown Lincoln, Neb. In its first year operated by the nonprofit Hear Nebraska, the 2016 Lincoln Calling featured 120 bands and comedians (from 13 states and 24 cities) across eight venues, drawing more than 6,000 music lovers to downtown Lincoln, including from 12 states, 27 cities and two countries. The festival is committed to being an accessible, affordable and easily navigable exhibition of Nebraska’s diverse arts scene as well to helping Lincoln attract top-flight national talent.
Founded by Nebraska music lover and promoter Jeremy Buckley in 2003, the festival has thrived on featuring bands just before they break, while showcasing a diversity of genres, artist and artistic disciplines along the way. Lincoln Calling is a chance to see Nebraska’s best artists sharing the stage with national acts, which in 2016 included Real Estate, Domo Genesis, Cloud Nothings, Screaming Females, Allan Kingdom, Ceremony and many more. Past lineups have featured Future Islands, Gillian Welch & Dave Rawlings, BOY, Ivan & Alyosha, The Hood Internet, Tilly and the Wall, among more than 1,000 others. And while Lincoln Calling has varied slightly in length and venue participation in its lifetime, in recent years it’s consistently offered in the vicinity of 100 performances.
Hear Nebraska assumed management and operations of Lincoln Calling in 2016, and immediately went to work building partners to help the festival impact a wider segment of Nebraskans, while attracting culture lovers from around the country to see what’s so cool about Lincoln. In 2017, fellow cultural nonprofit The Bay joined forces with Hear Nebraska to produce the 14th-annual event. That same year, long-running community events joined the Lincoln Calling fold, including Make Lincoln, YP Week and Startup Week. Constantly evolving, and always interested in serving the community in unique ways, Lincoln Calling aims to support Hear Nebraska’s vision to make Nebraska an internationally known cultural destination.
